A 100D high-tenacity nylon shell backs a 21,500mm waterproof membrane, sealed at every seam and closed with a YKK AquaGuard Vislon front zip, so water stays out through a full day on the mountain. Oversized dual pit-zips move heat and moisture out fast when you're working hard, then seal tight again for the way down. An articulated cut and 4-point adjustable hood move with you through technical terrain, and five storage zones,  two pack-friendly chest pockets, an internal goggle pocket, and a zippered valuables pocket,  keep everything within reach without adding bulk.

The jacket for the day the forecast turns bad. A tough outer fabric, a sealed zip, and taped seams keep water out through a full day on the mountain, while a pair of underarm vents let you cool off when you're working hard.

How It's Built

No jargon, just what each part does and why it's there.

Built from thicker, tougher materials than most

Fabric weight is measured in "denier" — basically how thick each individual thread is. A lot of ultralight jackets use a thin 20D or 40D fabric to save weight, but it tears easily against rock, ice, or a chairlift's metal bar. Ours is 100D — a noticeably thicker, tougher thread — so the shell can take hits that would rip a lighter fabric. Zips work the same way: a bigger "gauge" number means bigger, chunkier teeth that are harder to snag, jam, or force open. Our main front zip is a heavy #8 gauge, well above the thinner #3 or #5 zips you'll find on cheaper shells.

It won't let water in — even on a long day out

Jackets get a "waterproof rating," a measure of how much water pressure the fabric can take before it starts to leak. Ours is rated to 21,500mm — high enough to keep you dry through heavy snow or rain, not just a light shower. The fabric itself also lets some sweat and body heat escape on its own, but for real airflow when you're working hard, we rely on the vents below rather than the fabric alone.

The zip and seams won't let you down

Every seam is taped over so water can't creep in through the needle holes — we use a narrow tape rather than a wide one, so the seams stay slim instead of adding bulk under a pack strap. The main front zip is a YKK Vislon — the chunky, easy-to-grip, heavy-gauge style — finished with a waterproof AquaGuard coating. The smaller zips on the pit vents and pockets use YKK's regular AquaGuard coil zip, a lighter gauge that flexes more easily around a curve.

Dump heat fast when you're working hard

Two zips run under each arm. Open them on the way up a hill or a bootpack and they let heat and sweat escape quickly — much faster than the fabric can breathe on its own. Zip them back up and the jacket seals tight again.

Moves with you on technical terrain

The sleeves and shoulders are cut so your arms move freely instead of pulling at the fabric. The hood has four adjustment points, so it stays snug over a helmet without sliding around or blocking your view. The cuffs use an injection-molded Velcro tab rather than a sewn-on strip, so the grip holds up better over years of use.

Everything has a place, even with a pack on

Five pockets in total: two large chest pockets for gloves or skins, a soft pocket inside for your goggles, and a zippered inside pocket for your phone or wallet — all placed so you can still reach them with a backpack or harness on.

Care Guide

Four steps to keep it performing like day one.

01 — Prep

Empty all pockets and close every zipper and Velcro tab so nothing abrades the fabric during the cycle.

02 — Wash

Machine wash warm (40°C) with a technical cleaner like Nikwax Tech Wash. Skip standard detergents and fabric softeners — they clog the membrane and strip the DWR finish.

03 — Dry

Line dry, or tumble dry on low heat. A 20-minute tumble after washing helps reactivate the durable water-repellent (DWR) finish.

04 — Restore

Once water stops beading on the surface, clean the garment and apply a DWR re-proofing spray while it's still wet to bring the waterproofing back.
